Island life
Premuda has fewer than a hundred permanent residents and rather more going on than that suggests: a swimming race on Assumption Day, a cooking duel on the quay, an island-against-island tournament in September, and workshops that pass on skills the island would otherwise lose. Nearly all of it is put on by the islanders themselves.
The fixed points of the year
Three dates worth planning a stay around. Exact times are announced as the day gets closer.
25 July
The island’s patron saint is marked with an open-air concert in front of the Komunjski magazin, the old communal store, and with tournaments of briškula, trešeta and bocce. In 2026 the duo Musica Appassionata played from 21:00.
15 August
Assumption Day is the island’s busiest. A swimming race for the island’s young people fills the morning; from 19:00 the Premujska kužina takes over the quay at Krijal, where two teams cook against each other, cuttlefish brudet in 2026, with live music and everyone eating together afterwards.
Early September
Premuda hosts Silba and Olib for a day of old island games: bocce from 08:00, the card games briškula and trešeta from 09:00, tug-of-war on the Krijal quay in the afternoon, and a village feast from 20:00. Teams enter in advance; in 2026 the day fell on 5 September and cost 30 € a competitor.
The year’s programme
Between April and November the community association runs a rolling programme of workshops and volunteer days. Dates are set as the year goes on, and guests are welcome. Most of it works better with more hands.
April
Volunteers reopen the island’s walking paths before the season.
May
An almost-lost craft taught by an islander who still practises it: how a fishing net is repaired and rigged, in the Komunjski magazin.
May
A diving day with the island’s dive centre, clearing what the winter left underwater.
June
A cooking workshop for the island’s own fried pastry and its hand-rolled pasta, ending the way you would hope.
June
Out in the field with people who know it: which wild herbs grow here, how they were used in the kitchen and the medicine cupboard, and how to gather them without harming the stand.
July
Working the wool of the sheep that graze the islet of Školj.
July to August
Open-air screenings and animation workshops run by two visiting artists.
September
The island’s own potato has quietly become its brand; the day is a tasting and a cooking competition around it.
