Day Trips
The northern Adriatic is full of small islands, empty bays and hidden spots, most of them reachable only by boat. These are the day trips we would recommend.
·Getting there: Motorboat only
One of the finest sandy bays in the northern Adriatic, a short boat ride from Premuda. Knee-deep, clear water and fine sand almost everywhere, which is exactly what you want with children. The bay is wide enough that everyone finds an anchoring spot. If you fancy a walk, you can cross the island on foot in about 20 minutes to the small main village. A full day at the beach.
·Getting there: Motorboat or ferry
Car-free, peaceful and full of character. Shaded lanes, the round Toreta watchtower as its landmark, and quiet sandy beaches make Silba one of the best day trips. In the 18th century the island owned one of the largest sailing fleets on the Adriatic, and the lanes still show it.
·Getting there: Ferry or catamaran
A classic day trip to the mainland: over on the morning ferry, back in the evening. Zadar's ancient old town is made for wandering, and there is the Sea Organ, a lively fish market and plenty of restaurants and konobas tucked into the lanes. Enough for a full day. Check the timetable before you go.
·Getting there: Motorboat or ferry
The largest town of the Kvarner islands and a lively harbour: Mali Lošinj sits on a deep, horseshoe-shaped bay lined with colourful sea-captains' houses and a long waterfront promenade (the Riva) full of cafés and restaurants. The island is known for its mild climate, fragrant pine forests and herb gardens, and bills itself as the “island of vitality”. Don't miss the Apoxyomenos Museum with its ancient bronze statue and the bustling fish market. A rewarding day trip.
·Getting there: Motorboat or ferry
Gentle and unhurried: shallow lagoons, quiet beaches, vineyards and olive groves. The village has a 16th-century watchtower and the ruins of St Paul's church near Banve bay. Olib lives today on wine, olive oil and cheese.

A small, quiet island with very few inhabitants and a church up on the hilltop. The climb is worth it for the view across the whole northern archipelago. Very little tourism.

An abandoned island for a day hike. Cross the ridge to reach the far shore, where a carefully restored ruin stands in the middle of the wilderness. No electricity, no running water, no tourists.

Three islets between Premuda and Silba, one for the adventurous. Scramble up the rocks and you get the view over the open sea and the surrounding islands. No harbour, no beach, just limestone, spray and horizon.

A geological oddity: Šušak is the only island in the Adriatic made almost entirely of fine yellow sand, gathered by ancient winds, perhaps carried all the way from the Sahara. The beaches Spiaza and Bok are among the sandiest on the whole coast, and the water is shallow and warm, which suits small children. Around 150 inhabitants, a dialect of its own, barely any tourism.
